Over the past decade many people have found that blogging can be a very good way to generate income while working from home. Although in the early days blogs were mainly a means for people to share their lives with friends and family members, they have now evolved into a viable business opportunity. Whether you create a blog through one of the many companies that provide free blogging platforms or start one under your own domain name, there are numerous ways to generate income through the visitors you attract to your site. Here are some insights on how to build your blog into a solid revenue stream.

Have A Unique Focus

In order to make money through blogging you must first create a very good reason for attracting visitors and develop ways to keep them returning. Without a large amount of traffic to your blog it will never make money no matter how many income options you design into it. Ideally, your focus should be on something you are passionate about and shared in ways that enrich the lives of others. But unless your content is unique, you will be lost in the vast number of other blogs that already exist. It is estimated that bloggers now create over one million new posts a day worldwide. With that kind of competition, the only way to attract visitors is to offer them something that cannot be found elsewhere.

Treat It Like A Business

There are two main reasons why people start a blog. One is personal where someone wants to express themselves or share pictures and stories. The other is professional where the goal is to make money. Unless your reason is entirely the latter, you should ask yourself why you want to blog in the first place. It is almost impossible to make money unless your blog is designed and maintained as a marketing tool. You can blog about any topic you chose, but without a business focus there will be very little reason for visitors to take advantage of the advertisements that will generate your income. Figure out who your target audience is and then give them something of value for visiting your site. There are always exceptions to the rule, but if you want to make money you have to separate personal from the professional and concentrate on content that maximizes your income potential.

Monetize Your Blog

Once you have created a unique focus for your blog and structured it as a business, there are several ways to generate money from your efforts. These ways include:

  • Advertisements – Posting advertisements is the most common way to generate income from a blog. Services like Google’s AdSense provide no cost advertisements relevant to your blog topic where you are paid a few cents each time a visitor clicks through one of the ads. There are also affiliate marketing programs that will pay you a commission for every sale generated when a visitor from your site makes a purchase after they have clicked through an ad you posted. And if your blog becomes very well-known, there are many companies willing to pay you for advertising space.
  • Promote Products or Services – Some companies are willing to pay bloggers for reviewing and promoting their products or services. In example, most major online booksellers now have affiliate programs where if you write a book review, or even just mention the name of a book on your blog, a reader can click directly to the bookseller for more information. If that visitor then makes a purchase, you are paid a small commission. Many bloggers who are more locally focused in their content also offer to promote area businesses in their blog posts for a small fee.
  • Sell Subscriptions – If your blog is focused on valuable information like insider politics or medical breakthroughs, additional income can be generated through the sales of subscriptions. Many people are willing to pay for information that will keep them one step ahead of the competition. Subscriptions also boost your credibility as an expert on the topic you blog about because professionals do not divulge insider information without a fee.
  • Solicit Contributions – If your blog is highly centered around social issues or causes, don’t hesitate to ask for support contributions from your readers. You may be surprised by the number of people willing to support your work if they think you are making a positive difference in something they also care deeply about. PayPal and other similar financial programs now make it easy to establish a button on your blog that allows readers to contribute to your work with relative ease.
