They Make Outrageous Claims

“You will make money in your sleep! A mom in your area makes $756 a day working from home! Earn $85 an hour!” Scam work at home sites will often promise huge riches if you sign up for their proven “system” of working from home. They inform you that you can work when you want, whenever you want. Some will feature a picture of someone working on a beach from a laptop. These are almost always scams.

The reality of work at home is a much different picture than the ones these scammers are presenting. Most work from home jobs pay an hourly wage that is in line with wages for customer service agents in the area. While you can make a full-time living, most people who work from home online do not sail in yachts or fly in private jets. While you are more free in terms of your geographic location, many work at home jobs require you to have a land line phone, a silent background and a webcam. This would preclude you from working from the beach unfortunately.

They Ask for Money Upfront

Never trust a company that asks you to pay money for a job. Some small businesses that offer work from home opportunities may require you to pay start-up costs. Companies such as Amway and Avon follow this model and are not scams. This, however, is much different than a company asking for payment to give you a job. Never give out your personal information or credit card to a company that approaches you about a work at home job.

They Offer You Access to a List

There are many free resources online for work from home jobs. Companies that charge you for access to their database of employers are almost always scams. They are simply selling information that can be obtained with a simple search engine request. In some cases, you will pay for access to a list, only to find outdated job listings or opportunities that you are not qualified for. Beware of any company offering you exclusive access to special work from home listings.

Getting a Legitimate Work at Home Job

While there are many scam artists out there, you can still get a good job that you can work from the comfort of home. Most of these jobs are for customer service reps, technical support workers or reservations sales agents. You will have to find these jobs yourself, then apply to them online. After your application is complete, you will be called to schedule an interview. If all goes well, you will have a legitimate work at home job.
